When in Bicol, eat what the Bicolano’s eat

Travel blog|Longread |December, 2019 |

It was a 15-hour trip from Region IV-A to Bicol. The roads were longer than usual with the lumps and light cracks caused by the recent typhoon (?) //name of typhoon//. The view out wasn’t all that great either reaching at Polangui all to Legazpi City. Some house lost their roof, others had wood debris on their doorsteps. Still it was nice to be back in my birthplace.

Despite the strong wind(?) brought by the typhoon our house still stood strong, well except for that one-side of the wall at the second floor. The whole house was still better than expected, still. We had it repaired the next day.

Due to the recent calamity that struck Bicol, we had no electricity for the whole week so we had to stay at a hotel nearby and eat out.

That was probably the only thing I looked forward to, “eat out”. See, Bicol has a lot of cuisine that makes them unique and creates their own color.

Barbeque: After moving to Calamba, I never got to taste a bbq that could fit palette; or at least not what I’m looking for. Our neighbor back in Legazpi, Aling Minerva roasts the best bbq ever! The dips that she made fits perfect with it as well. Aside from the bbq, her “dugo” or pig’s blood is something that you’d look forward to.

Chocolate pili nut: Pili nut is one of Bicol’s delicacy. To give it a twist, souvenir shops at the terminal sells them coated with pure cocoa. A great snack to much on while studying.

Fruits and Vegetables: As it’s Christmas season, the fruits’ stand in the market sells various fruits and veggies. Some that you won’t see in most city.
